#5 Starting Pitcher: Russ Brewer

And we move into the top half of the starter list!

Russ_brewer_2007_head_vandy Waynesboro's Russ Brewer, our second General on the list, combined an ability to miss bats with a stinginess for allowing walks. His walks per nine innings was a minuscule 1.7, and his strikeouts per nine innings was a robust 9.0 (one strikeout per inning). He also went 4-2, 2.15, with a tiny 1.03 WHIP and .229 opponent's batting average.  He threw 2 shutouts; one against Woodstock on July 12, and the other on July 29 against Woodstock. He pitched in 11 games, starting 8, and threw a total of 54 1/3 innings. (Tiny sample size, but he threw complete game shutouts in 25% of his starts!)

He finished 6th in the league in ERA, 1st in shutouts, tied for first in complete games, and 10th in opponent's batting average.

Russ is a redshirt freshman at Vanderbilt University. He is expecting to throw some innings this spring for one of the top programs in the country; Vandy lost several arms from their 2006-2007 staff to the major league draft. If Russ pitches as well for Vanderbilt as he threw for Waynesboro, he'll join David Price and Casey Weathers as first round draftees from the Commodores.
