So, here we are. All the way up the top starter in the league, Luray's Dustin Umberger, a junior at Liberty. Umberger and Gilliam were, in my opinion, the biggest reasons the Wranglers advanced into the Championship Series against Waynesboro. They gave Coach Mike Bocock a huge one-two punch at the top of the rotation.
Umberger ended the season with amazing stats. In 11 starts, he went 9-0, 1.29, with a 0.90 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9, 12.6 K/9, and .174 opponent's batting average. He finished 2nd in the league in ERA, 1st in wins, 1st in strikeouts, 4th in innings pitched, 1st in games started, and 1st in opponent's batting average.
His 11 starts went like this:
June 2, at Fauquier: 7 innings, 4 hits 1 run (earned), 3 walks, 8 strikeouts, Loss, 3-2 (no decision, left with 2-1 lead)
June 7, at Front Royal: 5 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 1 unearned run, 0 walks, 9 strikeouts, Win, 2-1
June 14, vs. Haymarket: 6 shutout innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, 7 strikeouts, Win, 9-1
June 20, at Front Royal: 6 shutout innings, 1 hit, 2 walks, 8 strikeouts, Win, 3-1
June 27, at Haymarket: 5 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs (earned), 2 walks, 5 strikeouts, Win, 6-4
July 3, at Woodstock: 3 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs (earned), 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, Win, 8-3 (no decision)
July 13, vs. Fauquier: 7 shutout innings, 2 hits, 2 walks, 13 strikeouts, Win, 9-0
July 18, vs. Front Royal: 5 shutout innings, 3 hits, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts, Win, 10-1
July 26, vs. Harrisonburg: 6 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs (earned), 0 walks, 20 strikeouts, Win, 4-3
August 1, at Front Royal: 5 innings, 4 hits, 1 run (earned), 3 walks, 7 strikeouts, Win, 7-4
August 8, vs. Waynesboro: 7 shutout innings, 4 hits, 0 walks, 12 strikeouts, Win, 5-0
Amazing. He could have gone 10-0 with bullpen help (I'm not sure what happened with the July 3rd start).
At Liberty, Dustin has performed thusly:
Freshman: 4-2, 4.99, 1.53 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9, and 5.1 K/9 in 83 innings.
Sophomore: 5-4, 4.83, 1.54 WHIP, 3.2 BB/9 and 5.1 K/9 in 95 innings. (Talk about consistent!)
I won't be surprised if Dustin will build off his excellent Valley season and turn some heads with his junior season- let's hope so!
you are nice person
