Kipnis Hits Two Home Runs

Kipnis_022808 Arizona State's Jason Kipnis (Covington 06-07) has continued his hot streak, pounding two home runs and driving in 5 runs against the Michigan Wolverines in the opener of the Coca-Cola Classic in Tempe, Arizona, yesterday. He hit a solo shot in the 4th, and repeated the act in the 5th, launching a grand slam over the center field fence.

The Sun Devils won handily, 15-4. It looks like his hot hitting from the summer has carried over into the spring, as Kipnis is now hitting 400/550/1.333 in the first 4 games of the new season.

Baseball on Saturday!

Any kind of baseball in early March is a good thing, right?  If you believe that, like I do, then good things are going to happen this weekend.

Rebel Park in New Market will host four games this weekend: two doubleheaders, both starting at 1:00 PM. On Saturday, Dickinson College will face PS Harrisburg in the first doubleheader, and on Sunday, Dickinson will face Lincoln University in the second two-game set.  Admission is free, and the concession stand will be open!  (So my girls will chase foul balls, in hopes of winning a hot dog- well, that's what they do during Rebel games, anyway)

If you're interested in players to watch, Dickinson has three players listed by Collegiate Baseball as official "Players to Watch" in Division III: pitcher Brian Kelley, second baseman Ryan Miklusak, and outfielder Chris McInerney.

Valleyleaguepromologo The other purpose of the weekend to kick off the "Around the Valley in 60 Days" promotion. This is what the Around the Valley blog says of the promotion:  "The Around the Valley promotion is an invitation initiated by the Carter family of Luray, VA, through the companies Crystal Clear Delivery and S. Carter Studios, to support the 11 Valley League baseball teams and get to know this beautiful area of Virginia at the same time. We hope that you'll discover communities and explore the local businesses as you and your family and friends take the challenge to visit all 11 ball parks during the 60 day season. Around the Valley is not a race but an opportunity to enjoy summer nights spent watching the future stars of Major League Baseball. We are excited to hear about your adventures and hope you'll post pictures and leave comments along the way!"  Every attender this weekend will receive a "goodie" bag with a few giveaway items and information about this exciting idea.

You will hear much more about this promotion in this space.  Stay tuned!

The Westmans on the Move

An update on two former Rebels and all-around nice guys:

Ryley Westman (New Market 06) is working with former Rebels head coach Blaine Brown as the new volunteer assistant coach at Maryland. (No picture of Ryley- his name is listed at the bottom of the linked page.)

Britt_westman_2008 Younger brother Britt Westman (New Market 06-07) is on a tear to start his senior season at Northwest Missouri State. He is hitting 290/353/774 after eight games, with a whopping 5 home runs and 14 RBIs. (He's pictured left and below)

Britt has been amazingly consistent in his three full college seasons. As a freshman, he hit 326/381/456 in 206 at-bats. As a sophomore, he hit 327/405/556 in 171 at-bats. As a junior, he finished 326/410/611 in 190 at-bats. While his average stayed almost exactly the same over the three years, his OBP and slugging went up each year. So what might be in store this year?  327/423/660?  I guess we'll see!

Kentucky off to Quick Start

The Kentucky Wildcats, picked to finish third in the Eastern Division of the SEC by Collegiate Baseball, are off to a fast start to the 2008 college season.

After four games, the Wildcats, ranked 17th nationally, are 4-0, while outscoring their opponents 48-12. While it's true that the vanquished teams are not Arizona State and Vanderbilt (they were Xavier, South Alabama, Fairfield, and Oakland), Kentucky still had to get the job done.

Three former Valley Leaguers have played for Kentucky in the four games:

Collin Cowgill (Covington 05): 313/476/688 over 16 at-bats

Kevin Bishop (Covington 07): 0-3

Tommy Warner (Covington 07): 1-0, 0.00, 1 hit, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts in 3 innings.  That's Tommy pictured below.

Koshansky to Get Some Time

Joe_koshansky_2007_celebration The Colorado Rockies are already set at first base with 34-year old Todd Helton. Helton, however, will not travel to away games this spring due to his bad back.

Who will get quite a bit of that time?  Valley League alum Joe Koshansky (Staunton 02-03), that's who.  Joe is coming off a 295/380/490 Triple-A season at Colorado Springs, where he hit 30 doubles, 21 home runs, and drove in 99 runs.

Joe is not a threat to take over Helton's job at this point, but getting more at-bats in front of manager Clint Hurdle this spring could be a very good thing if Helton gets hurt, or if the big league club needs a left-handed bat off the bench during the year.  In the meantime, Koshansky will wait for his next big-league opportunity.

Checking in with the Oklahoma City Stars

Each summer, Oklahoma City sends a few players north to play for the Turks in the Valley League. A few of these players have gone on to greater things, like Bobby Spain (06-07) and Patrick Norris (07). One has inspired a new nickname and moose call (David Dennis (06-07)).

David_dennis_okc_022408 This year's NAIA squad features four 2007 Turks: Sammy Lee, BJ Wheeler, Garrett Parker, and David "Moose" Dennis (pictured left).  Since NAIA schools are not beholden to the NCAA start date, the Stars have played 14 games already. They have played pretty well, too, considering they have gone 13-1 in those games.

Here's how the Turks fared thus far.  Keep in mind the small sample sizes:

Lee is struggling a bit right now: he's 2-20 so far, with 3 stolen bases.

Wheeler is hitting 346/433/500 in 26 at-bats

Parker is 0-0, 1.23, 2 saves, 1.51 WHIP, 4.9 BB/9, and 14.8 K/9 in 7 1/3 innings.

Moose is 286/288/592 in 49 at-bats. He's tied for second on the team with 5 home runs, and he leads the team with 21 RBIs.

It certainly looks like the Stars are on their way to another dominating season!

Kipnis, ASU on a Collective Tear

Jason_kipnis_2007_asuArizona State has played three games so far in this young college baseball season, and it has won all three, outscoring opponents 36-6. The first victim was Miami (Ohio) (7-0), the second was #3 Vanderbilt (18-6), and the third was Oregon State (11-0).

Of course, our main interest in the Sun Devils is twofold: Jason Kipnis (Covington 06-07) and Ryan Sontag (Winchester 07).

Kipnis is off and running so far, going 4-10, with 3 runs, 5 RBIs, 5 walks, 2 strikeouts, 1 triple, 2 home runs, and a stolen base. He led off against Miami, but has batted fifth in the next two games.

Sontag has also played in all three games, going 1-6, with 1 run, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.

I also ran across this article  in which coach Pat Murphy addresses his new center fielder: "The way we got Jason Kipnis was when his release came in," Murphy said,"I called Tim Corbin since he was in his conference and I knew he couldn't be released to the same conference, and I said that I was going to mention one name and want your first reaction. So I said 'Kipnis' and he said 'take him' and the rest his history."  I think all of the 2007 Valley League coaches would have the same reaction.  (To see my interview with Jason, click here)

It should be fun to see where ASU ends up this year: I imagine that a trip to Omaha might just be in the cards (so to speak).

What is This, Nostalgia Week?

Just hangin' out, listening to the Goldmine Pickers and Trent Wagler*, and wondering why this past week was like junior high AND early college days, which, as you might imagine, is a real stretch.

*If you enjoy bluegrass/folk music at ALL, you need to pick up a copy of their new albums. The Pickers' new album is called "Lonesome Gone"; Trent's is "Adrienna Valentine."  They'll be playing together March 29, at a new venue in Harrisonburg named Clementine. **

**Apologies to Joe Posnanski- I'm stealing his format for asides.

So, a week after I was thinking wistfully about Strat-O-Matic and how many games we played in one year in the EMC dorms, I found myself heading to the roller rink in Harrisonburg (called "Fun Zone") to join my family at a birthday party for a couple of my daughter's friends.  The last time I was in roller skates was in junior high in Sellersville, Pennsylvania. Back then, my hormones were going nuts... all I was interested in was not falling and make an idiot out of myself* and angling to have a partner for the next couple skate.**

* Cause, you know, that would be uncool, man.

** My memories of those couple skates?  Clammy hands.  This was years before we learned we had to wash our hands every ten minutes to avoid the flu. Or is that just my OCD*** coming out?

*** I don't really have OCD... just a few tendencies, is all. Please don't ask my friends about that.

We pulled up to the rink, and my daughters were in skates and lurching around the rink within minutes. I decided to give it the old college try, and soon had a very smelly set of size 13 roller skates on my feet.*

* Yes, I wear size 13 shoes.  And I think I'm about 6 foot 8 in skates.  And they were really smelly. I didn't make that up.

Pretty soon I was chasing my daughters around, and having a great time!  Who knew?  Skating came back pretty quickly... I just had to dodge the debris of small children. Once, that was my daughter, who fell right in front of me. I went over her- just missing her hands.  That would have been bad.

I didn't recognize most of the music, which means that it must have been Britney Spears* or Hannah Montana or whoever is popular these days. I didn't recognize it because I am an old fart.

* Britney Spears made it big while we were living in Kenya.  I honestly have never knowingly listened to one of her songs, which means I have more of my soul remaining than you.

Suddenly, however, the annoyingly young DJ put on some music I know (unfortunately): Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean!"*  I think the song was played the last time I skated!  Has this song been played at roller rinks for all these years?

* Good thing my daughters were too busy falling down to notice the words. "The kid is not my son" may have sparked some uncomfortable conversations around the supper table.

Right after "Billie Jean?" Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun!"*

* The song came out in 1983. Imagine what some of the adults who fought for women's rights and feminism in the 70's thought about Cyndi's ideas?

So what is my point to all this?*  Well, I find it interesting that some pieces of our culture survive- and it can be very odd where it survives. Would radio stations, even oldie stations, play old Cyndi Lauper? But the roller rink still does, just like when my hands were clammy even thinking about skating with a girl.

* Want to know the Valley League connection to this riff?  Fun Zone is right across the street from Wease's Auto Exchange!

Valley Leaguers on Golden Spikes Watchlist

The Golden Spikes award, sponsored by major league baseball, is given to the top player in college baseball. This year, for the first time ever, USA baseball has released a list of the top 75 players heading into the new college season. (The list will add and subtract throughout the year as performance dictates.)

On May 20, the list will be cut to 50 names, and fans will have an opportunity to vote for their top 5 selections over the following  two weeks. On June 3, the list will be cut down to 5 players, with the winner announced on July 16.

Four former Valley Leaguers are on the initial list:

Yonder Alonso (Luray 06), Miami (No surprise here- everyone has Yonder listed this year!)

Collin Cowgill (Covington 05), Kentucky

Jared Bradford (Luray 06), LSU

Phil Disher (Front Royal 05), South Carolina

These awards have so much to do with popularity and hype that I would be surprised if Alonso isn't one of the finalists for several of them at the end of the year (this is assuming (oh, no- you know what that means) he has a good-to-excellent year at the plate).  Conversely, Disher, Bradford and Cowgill will have to wow observers to be in the running at the end of the year.  (In other words, Pedro Alvarez, Justin Smoak, Kyle Russell, Buster Posey, Blake Stouffer and Alonso have a head start.)

But following the Valley League is all about following the underdogs- so I'll be rooting for all of "our" guys to have good years!

Alonso, Cowgill Collegiate Baseball All-Americans

For those of you who don't know yet, Collegiate Baseball puts out an amazing college baseball preview issue.  They rank the top teams at each level, from D-I to Community Colleges. They list the top players returning, top newcomers, and 2008 outlook for each of those teams. I hope to cover some of that information as we move in to a week left in our preseason (uniform D-I starting date is February 22).

Anyway, Yonder Alonso (Luray 06) and Collin Cowgill (Covington 05) were named to CB's preseason NCAA Division I All-American List.

Alonso is a second-team first baseman, while Cowgill is a second-team outfielder. Both players expect to be drafted this June.  (Alonso, left, and Cowgill)
