Gardner Makes Major League Debut

Brett Gardner What a banner year this has been so far! Chris Carter, Brad Ziegler, Chris Perez, Brian Bocock, Clay Timpner, Carlos Guevara, Nick Stavinoha, and now Brett Gardner (New Market 03-04) have made their major league debuts this season.

Gardner, the latest success story, was called up by the New York Yankees on June 30th, and made his debut that night. He had been playing very well for Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, hitting 287/412/429 in 80 games. He had a 61/68 BB/K ratio (excellent), and 34 stolen bases in 42 tries. This sounds strange to write, but maybe Brett's patience will be a help in the Yankees' lineup.

Brett got his first major league hit off Warner Madrigal on June 2nd, and stole second base, appropriately. It also looks as if Brett will have an opportunity to play quite often in New York, as Johnny Damon might go on the disabled list with a shoulder injury.

Congratulations on making the bigs, Brett!

We just returned from the All Star game to see Brett hit the game winning RBI in the top of the 10th against the Red Sox. He was named the Player of the Game--quite an auspicious beginning for our young man!

correction: It was a walk off hit in the bottom of the 10th. The Yankee players rubbed his head so hard I am not sure he has any hair left. It was a great at bat as he was behind in the count 0-2 and fouled off several upper 90 fastballs before hitting the ball up the middle for the game winner. Charlie Dodge

The truth is out! Charlie is the real baseball brain behind this operation--but I'm learning!
