And we're down to two!
Our #2 reliever has a big-league pedigree; his father, an 11-year veteran of the majors, is also named Mike Marshall. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox, even earning two championship rings with the Dodgers.
If the younger Mike continues to pitch like he has for the Woodstock River Bandits and Stanford Cardinal, he may very well join his father in the Baseball Encyclopedia.
Mike threw exceptionally well for Woodstock in the summer of '08, finishing 0-0, 1.75, with an 0.895 WHIP, 1.4 BB/9, 15.8 K/9, and .190 opponent's batting average in 25 2/3 innings. That amazingly low BB/9 coupled with his absurdly high K/9 is what makes Marshall ATVL's #2 reliever.
Adding to the mix, Mike also hit 301/333/506 in 83 at-bats, with 5 doubles, 4 home runs, and a 3/18 BB/K ratio.
For Stanford as a freshman in 2008, Mike went 1-1, 6.10, with 1 save, 1.45 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9, and 3.9 K/9 in 20 2/3 innings. He has improved these numbers significantly in 2009 (so far), as he's 0-0, 3.74, with a 1.43 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9, and 8.7 K/9 in 21 2/3 innings (current stats through May 3).
Congratulations, Mike!
