For those who are wondering, yes, ATVL will be posting the top hitters, starting pitchers, and relievers later on this offseason. Baseball America's list and ATVL's lists are different in one critical way: BA looks at the players as a scout would, but ATVL looks at stats. So while BA will list players by who has the most potential, this site will rank the best seasons, regardless of the future of that player.
Now that that's out of the way, here's BA's #8 player: Pablo Bermudez, from Florida Atlantic (and the Luray Wranglers).
Bermudez teamed with No. 1 prospect (deleted- you have to wait!) to form the best corner outfielder tandem in the Valley. Bermudez hit .318/.414/.465 on the summer, showing an intriguing blend of speed and pop from the top of Luray's order. Bermudez is a bit of a free swinger right now and strikes out too often as a result of trying to pull offspeed pitches, but he has the bat control to make consistent contact once he becomes more disciplined. An above-average runner, he still needs to improve his instincts on the basepaths before he can be considered a good baserunner. Bermudez is also a versatile defender with a plus arm and good range that plays at all three outfield positions.
Pablo also hit very well in his freshman year at FIU, ending with 313/388/448 numbers in 163 at-bats. He was teammates with other Valley League standouts like Lammar Guy, 2008 MVP Tyler Townsend, Ryan Mollica, Junior Arrojo, Steve Stropp, and Greg Waddell.
