ATVL is adding a new feature this off-season: Baseball America's top 10 prospects. BA's Jesse Burkhart polled the Valley League coaches and listed, in their opinion, the top prospects in the league in 2009. Each prospect also received a paragraph scouting report. Remember to go to baseballamerica.com to see all their features; if you, fearless reader, are interested in prospects, BA is the place to go.
We shall begin the countdown with #10: Chris Sorce, from the Harrisonburg Turks. Burkhart's report:
As Harrisonburg's closer, Sorce was dominant, recording three saves and compiling a 4-0, 0.98 mark with 25 strikeouts and six walks in 18 innings. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound power righty relies mostly on his 92-93 mph fastball (which touched 94 this summer) and needs to improve the quality of his offspeed pitches. He throws a hard slider that registers at 85-88 mph, although the pitch currently lacks depth. He also mixes in a changeup, but it's usually a straight offering. Sorce signed with the Mariners as a 26th-rounder.
For the record, that's a 3.0 BB/9, and 12.5 K/9 in those 18 innings. Paul Gibson, former major leaguer and Seattle scout, was at the all-star game in Woodstock to see Sorce throw, and he signed soon after.
Assigned to the Pulaski Mariners of the Appalachian League, Sorce has gone 2-1, 3.45, with a 1.53 WHIP, 4.0 BB/9, and 12.6 K/9 in 15 2/3 innings.
